Herdwick sheep are the native breed of the central and western Lake District and live on the highest of England’s mountains. They are extremely hardy and are managed in the traditional way on the Lake District fells that have been their home for generations.

We have at our farm Herdwick sheep and Herdwick crossbreeds.  The benefit of crossing our sheep is to extend the time period for having lamb available.  Some of the cross-breeds which enjoy exactly the same pasture do grow a little bigger and quicker by their very nature.  It would however, be very hard to discern any difference in flavour as ‘au terroir’ as the French would say (the ground, grazed area, paddock pasture) is the same.
